    Diesel has become discredited because of its nitrogen oxide emissions. Go2water has a sustainable and cost-effective solution for this: Water Injection. For inland shipping, it offers the opportunity to further improve its image as an environmentally friendly means of transport; CHP engines can meet increasing exhaust emission limits with water injection.     How Water Injection Works

    Time for water - against diesel exhaust gases!

    We incorporated the expertise from various entrepreneurial activities, especially in the field of water injection (e.g. fuel-water emulsion), into Go2water GmbH, which was founded at the beginning of 2020. Its business purpose is the development and marketing of a water injection system (intake manifold) for retrofitting internal combustion engines; the focus is on reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines without sacrificing performance, consumption and CO2 emissions. A technology that can be retrofitted to virtually all diesel engines in passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, inland waterway vessels and stationary engines. Water injection lowers the very high combustion temperatures and thus combats the cause of the problematic NOx emissions. The effectiveness of our process has been scientifically proven. The greatest advantage over the systems available to date is the universally applicable, extremely space-saving design, the simple technical controllability, the high availability and the favorable price. Go2water combines a basically proven process with modern know-how and intelligent electronics. Its beneficiaries are both people and the environment.

    One hundred percent shareholder of Go2water is Vogtmann und Herold Beteiligungs GmbH, a company of the Vogtmann Group, whose mobility competence is bundled in Vogtmann-Herold+Co.GmbH. The companies are headquartered in Neuwied. Go2water thus benefits from being embedded in an innovative and economically well-positioned traditional company with almost 75 years of diesel expertise.

    Treat NOx with water

    With water injection, distilled water is injected into the engine's intake air as a dispersed spray, depending on the load. This addresses the core problem of the diesel engine: The very high combustion temperatures, the cause of NOx emissions. Go2water reduces the temperature peaks. To a level that continues to ensure the function of diesel particulate filters or storage or oxidation catalytic converters - and starts where exhaust gas recirculation reaches its limits. Go2water water injection can be retrofitted to all passenger car diesel engines in emission classes Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6 b/c without exception. As proven by various research projects, the efficiency of the diesel engines is fully maintained: Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will not increase, running culture and performance remain unchanged. In the automotive sector, Go2water water injection has a unique selling point: it is currently the only technology available that combats exhaust gas pollutants at source instead of aftertreating them in the exhaust tract. We are working to make the system available for the first engine families under the German Government's Retrofit Directive by the end of 2021. Our core objectives are a favorable price (from 1200 euros including installation for a four-cylinder engine) and the broadest possible model availability. An Initial Assessment by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) was completed positively this spring.

    Always a hand's width of water in the intake air

    The high nitrogen oxide pollution in the cities has also led to a focus on the reduction of exhaust emissions from ship engines. Go2water offers river transport a new and very economical way of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. Water injection makes sense even for the predominantly smaller engines used in passenger shipping. Particularly because the system requires extremely small installation space as well as very little maintenance and does not increase operating costs. Additional benefit for Ship Operators: With the Onboard Electronic Control System, Go2water has not only a NOx sensor but also an integrated fuel consumption sensor. The combination of water injection with new fuels offers further potential for Inland Navigation. A research project using GTL fuel is currently being carried out at HTW Saar University in cooperation with G02water. The aim is to simultaneously reduce nitrogen oxides and fine particles by 50 percent and to completely avoid diesel odours. Water injection can also be combined with diesel particulate filters (DPFs), a measure that will be subsidized by the German Government by up to 90% from the second half of 2021.

    NOx, SCR, WLTP and Co. - what do they mean?

    NOx

    Nitrogen oxide is a collective term for various gaseous compounds consisting of the atoms nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O). Put simply, only the two most important compounds NO (nitrogen monoxide) and NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) are considered. Nitrogen oxides are among the "mass pollutants" in the air: more than one million tons are released each year only in Germany. In Germany, the common classification as an extremely harmful irritant gas is not undisputed.

    SCR / AdBlue

    The SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) consists of a catalyst into which a mixture of 67.5 percent water and 32.5 percent synthetic urea (brand name AdBlue) from a separate tank is injected. In the exhaust system, the liquid then reacts with the nitrogen oxides of the engine combustion within fractions of a second and converts these emissions into water vapor and nitrogen. SCR technology requires an extremely high level of engine control adaptation.

    EGR

    The abbreviation stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation to reduce NOx emissions within the engine. Part of the exhaust gas is cooled and mixed back into the charge air. This reduces the peak temperature of the combustion. However, EGR can only be used to a very limited extent, as excessive admixture leads to negative effects such as loss of performance and an increase in particulate emissions. The resulting sooting of the EGR valves triggered the VW Diesel Scandal.

    WLTP (WLTC)

    Since September 1, 2017, the new "Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (Cycle)" has applied throughout the EU to the registration of new passenger cars, following the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) which has been in force since 1992. The new test does not only take longer, namely 30 instead of 20 minutes, but the tested vehicles also accelerate significantly more frequently, up to a recommended motorway speed of 130 km/h. The gearshift points are also readjusted during acceleration. In addition, the proportion of time during which the vehicle is at standstill is reduced.

    RDE

    The RDE test procedure (Real Driving Emissions) provides more information about the real emission behaviour during operation on the road and has been valid in the EU since September 2017. Under laboratory conditions, approx. 25 % lower emissions compared to RDE are measured. This means that test detection by the vehicle is no longer possible (VW Diesel Scandal). The vehicle is driven outside on a stretch of road and accelerated and braked there. A portable emission measurement system (PEMS) is used to determine the particle number and the concentration of nitrogen oxides.

    NOx Limit Value

    The diesel debate revolves around vehicles in the Euro 4, 5 and 6 b/c emission classes.

    The Retrofit Directive, which has been in force since 2020, prescribes a uniform nitrogen oxide limit value of 270 mg/km for Euro 4 and Euro 5 passenger cars. For Euro 6 b/c cars, which also frequently exceed the permissible NOx limit, there is as yet no set of regulations for retrofitting.

    When a system is installed that has been approved by the KBA (the German Federal Motor Transport Authority) in accordance with the Retrofit Directive, it is registered in the vehicle's documents in the form of a special type-approval certificate (Sonder-ABE).
